Problem Statement

I have used many different measuring tools, however, I have not found a compact storable option. For this project, I want to design a Multi-Size Measuring cup that is compact and storable. I am designing a measuring cup that will be adjustable to different measurements. I have selected a strategy for the measuring cup so I need to begin determining the specific sub-assemblies that will accomplish my design intent. I will decide which concept is best to allow for adjustability and securing ability using the design parameters laid out in my FRDPARRC tables.

Assumptions

I am assuming that the user has the ability to use both of their hands and the user can slide the cylinders by themself. The measuring cup will be used for normal kitchen ingredients, will remain away from direct sunlight for most of the time. Will not be exposed to high heat or freezing temperatures.

Decision Matrix

DM

The decision matrix above analyzes all three concepts by comparing the most important aspects of my intended design which are: size, accuracy, durability, manufacturability, and cost. Each aspect was given a weight according to their importance to the design with accuracy carrying the most weight.

Concept 2 turned out to be the best concept. It is the most accurate design which was the criteria with the highest weight but it also the best well-rounded.

Concept 1 overall solved all the problems and scored the best in most areas but did very poorly in terms of accuracy. Since the accuracy in the design is up to the user's eye and the patience they have with friction it scored very poorly in terms of accuracy.

Concept 3 scored the lowest because it was just average, it did not do one thing better than the others. It as design works but just underperforms compared to the other designs. Also, the actual use of this design would take more time to complete the task than any of the other two designs.

Lessons Learned

The biggest challenge for me this week has been time. Each week I say I am going to work earlier, and each week the assignment is due I am working late into the night before it is due. I have also been teaching myself how to use Solidworks so this made the assignment significantly harder than it needed to be.
